Curtis is a native Houstonian and a former client of Hendricks Sports Management. He graduated from St. Pius High School in Houston in 1980, where he played football, basketball, golf and baseball. He played on several state championship teams and was elected to the St. Pius Hall of Fame.
After graduating from St. Pius, Curtis attended Blinn College on a baseball scholarship where he was an All Conference selection. He then went on to play minor league baseball with the Montreal Expos and Houston Astros
After his professional baseball career ended, Curtis returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston. He then worked in the insurance industry for six years before deciding to return to his first love, baseball.
Starting first as a local scout, then as an area scout, Curtis became West Coast Crosschecker for the Seattle Mariners. He moved to the Florida Marlins where he became the National Crosschecker. He held the same position with the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. His ability to recognize talent, paired with his reputation in the industry, played a major role in critical draft decisions made by these clubs.
In late 2005 Curtis accepted an offer from Hendricks Sports Management to return to the players' side of the baseball industry.
